Asia Transfer Window: hires for Latham & Watkins, Orrick and PwC
A roundup of the latest moves in the Asia-Pacific region

In Hong Kong, Withers has boosted its hospitality practice with the hire of Mayer Brown JSM partner David Mallinson. Mallinson focuses his practice on advising hotel operators and investors in Asia. Withers launched its hotels and hospitality practice in March 2016 with the hire of Robert Williams, Justin Gross and their team from Australian firm Ryan Lawyers.
Allen & Overy has hired Standard Chartered's Thailand head of compliance Nithi Laophulsuk to join the firm as a capital markets partner in Bangkok. Laophulsuk has also worked at US firm Hunton & Williams. He will focus his practice on clients operating in, or seeking to operate in, Thailand.
Latham & Watkins has hired Covington & Burling litigator Hui Xu in Shanghai, who joins the firm as a partner. Xu focuses his practice on litigation and investigation matters and has experience advising Chinese state and corporate clients on international trade.
Gadens employment partner Katherine Morris has joined Norton Rose Fulbright in Sydney. Morris is the second hire the firm has made into its Australia employment practice in recent months; in July, the firm brought onboard Perth-based partner Samantha Maddern from Herbert Smith Freehills.
PwC has boosted its legal offering in Vietnam with the hire of Gide Loyrette Nouel partner and head of its Vietnam practice, Nasir Dao. He joins PwC as head of its Vietnam legal practice. Dao is a French law-qualified corporate specialist with experience advising financial institutions and Vietnamese companies. The hire leaves Gide with three partners and two associates in the country.
Holman Fenwick Willan has lost Hong Kong insurance and shipping partner Caroline Thomas to Hill Dickinson. Prior to Hill Dickinson, Thomas was at Clyde & Co. Her appointment follows the arrival of litigation partner Bryan O'Hare last year from Hogan Lovells.
Japan's Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (MHM) has announced that it is set to merge with domestic Thai firm Chandler & Thong-ek (C&T) Law Offices. The name of the joint operation in Thailand will be Chandler MHM Limited, when the combination is completed in January 2017. The practice will be jointly led by MHM partner Satoshi Kawai and C&T's current managing partner Niwes Phancharoenworakul. MHM opened in Bangkok last year and now has five lawyers, including two partners on the ground, while C&T is a 12-partner, Bangkok-based outfit.
Boston firm Nixon Peabody has launched a representative office in Singaprore – its third base in Asia. It has formed an association with domestic firm Angeline Suparto Law Corporation. Last year, the US firm combined with Hong Kong outfit Cheng Wong Lam & Partners to form Nixon Peabody CWL.
Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has hired Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas TMT partner Asim Abbas to join the firm's New Delhi office. The rival firms run by brothers Cyril and Shardul Shroff were formed last year following the split of family firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co.
In Tokyo, Squire Patton Boggs has hired cybersecurity partner Scott Warren, who has previously held roles as Sega general counsel and a patent lawyer for Microsoft.
Walkers has added to its Hong Kong finance practice with the hire of James Webb from offshore rival firm Mourant Ozannes. Webb has worked in Singapore, British Virgin Islands, London and Cayman Islands advising on a wide range of debt transactions.
Also in Hong Kong, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has hired Sidley Austin litigator Charles Allen, who lead the firm's Hong Kong commercial litigation team.
In further movement at offshore firms, Collas Crill Singapore head Marcus Hinkley has joined Withers KhattarWong as special counsel.
Allen represents banks, insurers and investment funds in contractual disputes and tort cases. He also advises on regulatory matters and government investigations. He joined Sidley in 2002 and became a partner in 2007.
In Perth, King & Wood Mallesons partner Nicholas Creed has moved to Linklaters' Australia alliance firm Allens. Creed joins Allens' banking and finance practice on 1 December 2016. He focuses his practice on corporate finance, specialising in infrastructure and resources.

Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
