King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) Dubai litigation partner Tim Taylor and corporate partner Michael Cziesla are set to go head to head for the role of European and Middle East senior partner.

Taylor has been a partner at the firm since 1988 and specialises in international litigation, regulatory investigations, fraud and asset tracing, and public international law. He is currently the only QC residing in the United Arab Emirates.

Cziesla has been a partner at KWM since 2002 and, according to the firm's website, is on the German management team. He advises on corporate transactions and specialises in multi-jurisdictional and cross-border M&A, leveraged buyouts, divestments, joint ventures and restructurings.

Cziesla's name has not been linked with the role before but Taylor had been widely expected to run for the post against UK investment funds head Michael Halford, who has opted not to stand.

Nominations for the position were due to close last Friday (7 October) but the deadline was extended until yesterday  (10 October).

Voting is now open and the result is expected to come in between 19 October and 26 October.

The senior partner election was triggered by Stephen Kon's decision to step down at the start of September.

Last week, KWM elected the former chairman of legacy Australian firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Tim Bednall, as its new European managing partner.

Corporate partner Bednall saw off competition from tax partner Gareth Amdor to win the vote of the European partnership.

Bednall is currently joint global coordinator of the KWM corporate, M&A and securities practice but previously chaired the legacy Australian firm and played a role in KWM's 2013 merger with legacy SJ Berwin. He relocated to London in February last year.
