Baker & McKenzie, Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) and Singapore's Allen & Gledhill are among the firms competing for prizes in the third annual Asian Lawyer Emerging Markets Awards, which recognise those working in Southeast Asia and India.
Chicago-based Baker & McKenzie will compete with Latham & Watkins, Sidley Austin and White & Case for Emerging Markets International Law Firm of the Year, while Allen & Gledhill will race Drew & Napier, India's Khaitan & Co and Indonesia's Melli Darsa & Co for Emerging Markets Independent Law Firm of the Year.
The contenders for International Law Firm Leader of the Year include White & Case's Asia head Eric Berg; Shearman & Sterling Singapore managing partner Bill McCormack; Hogan Lovells Asia-Pacific managing partner Patrick Sherrington; and Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy Asia managing partner David Zemans.
At their indigenous counterparts, Indonesia's Melli Darsa of her namesake firm, India's Zia Mody of AZB & Partners, Cyril Shroff of the newly formed Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Thailand's Darani Vachanavuttivong of Tilleke & Gibbins, will compete for Independent Law Firm Leader of the Year.
The winners of these four awards will be announced alongside those of 24 other firm and individual awards on Thursday, 24 November, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Singapore.
The evening will also recognise the in-house community with six awards, with one pro bono winner also to be announced.
Last year's big winners included Clifford Chance, which scooped both International Law Firm of the Year and International Law Firm leader of the Year. Singapore's WongPartnership was awarded Independent Firm of the Year, with Rajah & Tann managing partner Lee Eng Bengr named Independent Firm Leader of the Year.
