Addleshaw Goddard has brought arbitration proceedings against former real estate head Mark Haywood, who left to join Nabarro in 2014.

Haywood joined Nabarro's fledgling Manchester office in 2014, alongside fellow Addleshaws real estate partners Nathan Jansen and Monica Brij.

Haywood, who qualified in 1991, had stints at both Nabarro and Olswang before joining Addleshaws.

The move has been greeted with surprise by current and former Addleshaws partners, who have questioned the motivation behind the management's decision to bring the proceedings.

One former partner said: "My thought was: how damaging is that? Are they looking to recover money or to send a message to partners in the firm?"

One partner said that it is "unbelievable", but added that the move is "pretty typical of John Joyce" who "doesn't shy away from conflict".

The firm recently changed its partnership deed to make it more difficult for partners to leave. The changes included a restriction on the number of partners that could leave in a year and the introduction of a "bad leaver" clause, which could see partners having their equity cut if they carried out certain behaviours as they leave the firm.

The firm recently announced that it was restarting partner profit distributions and firm-wide pay reviews, after both were delayed in August in the wake of June's Brexit vote.

Addleshaws and Nabarro both declined to comment.
