Dentons is set to move into the Central American market through a tie-up with Costa Rica-based firm Munoz Global, a deal that will also see the international firm gain bases in Panama and Nicaragua.

Munoz is a newly established law firm set up by partners Jose Antonio Munoz and Pedro Munoz following their departure from Central American firm Arias & Munoz, which has now rebranded as Arias.

The new, 75-strong firm comprises the Costa Rican offices of Arias as well as new bases in Panama and Nicaragua. The combination is subject to a vote by partners at both firms.

Dentons global chairman Joe Andrew said: "Our goal is to connect clients to top-tier talent by combining with firms whose lawyers are highly regarded and deeply rooted in the local economy and legal culture."

Last year, Dentons signed combination deals with a number of firms across the globe. Its landmark China combination with Dacheng was followed by deals with firms in the US (McKenna Long & Aldridge), Singapore (Rodyk), Australia (Gadens), Colombia (Cardenas & Cardenas) and Mexico (Lopez Velarde).

In Europe, the firm is considering opening a fourth base in Germany alongside its Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin offices, and is also currently looking at a merger deal in the Netherlands.

Global chief executive Elliot Portnoy added: "Since our launch in Mexico and Colombia earlier this year, cross-border work into and out of the region has grown rapidly, demonstrating that clients see a great advantage to being served by a global firm that can offer the best locally informed legal counsel and business advice anywhere they operate.

"Given the interconnectedness of the economies of Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, we see real opportunities to serve clients further through more intra-region work as well."
