The ramifications of Donald Trump's election victory, the Brexit vote and the threats presented by cybercrime will head up the agenda at this week's Transatlantic General Counsel Summit New York.
The event, which will take place this Wednesday (7 December) at New York's Metropolitan Club, will be chaired by Marsh & McLennan Companies GC Peter Beshar and Viacom GC Michael Fricklas.
Beshar will deliver a keynote speech alongside the FBI's Ari Mahairas – the special agent in charge of cybercrime in the organisation's New York field office – on the role general counsel can play in tackling the threats posed by cybercrime.
Mahairas said: "The greatest theme I want the attendees to take away is that we in law enforcement cannot fight cybercrime alone. There needs to be two-way communication between the private sector and law enforcement for this fight to be successful. There also needs to be information sharing among the private sector – companies will realise that this can really help them to accomplish their cyber security goals.
"The FBI is engaged on the front lines and continues to be agile and morph with the moving threats cyber actors present. However, we can only see part of the problem without the private sector sharing what they are seeing on their networks and working with us."
Former General Electric GC Ben Heineman will also deliver a keynote speech on the difficulties faced by companies when going global.
The event will feature a panel debate on how GCs can deal with global uncertainty prompted by events such as Brexit and Trump's election, featuring input from Smith & Nephew chief legal officer Jack Campo, Qualcomm global antitrust head Alvaro Ramos, PayPal financial regulation head Ingrid Busson and MetLife GC Ricardo Anzaldua.
The consequences of Brexit and what challenges it may pose for international GCs will also be highlighted in a presentation by Eversheds' EU and competition head Ros Kellaway.
Other speakers at the event will include Anheuser-Busch US GC Katie Barrett, BT Americas head of legal Justin Castillo, Travelzoo GC Rachel Barnett and Credit First National Association GC Oscar Romero.
