Law firms have taken half of the top 10 spots in Stonewall's latest workplace equality ranking, with a total of 17 included in the list of 100 LGBT-friendly employers.

Pinsent Masons is the highest ranking law firm in second place, up from fifth last year, while Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) is the highest placed new entrant at number eight.

The other law firms in the top 10 are Clifford Chance – which has jumped from ninth place last year to fourth – with Baker McKenzie and Norton Rose Fulbright also making the top 10 at seventh and 10th respectively.

The Top 100 Employers Workplace Equality index measures the progress that UK organisations are making on lesbian, gay and bisexual equality within the workplace.

It is measured by looking at progress on policy and practice, employee engagement, employee development and support, monitoring, community engagement, the number of openly gay, lesbian or bisexual employees at senior levels within the organisation, and the results of a staff feedback survey.

Other top performers this year include Dentons, which climbed 80 spots to 17th, and Hogan Lovells, which climbed 40 places to reach number 17.

Stonewall legal sector expert Elliot Pentland said: "The legal sector really is leading by example, demonstrating a true commitment to LGBT diversity and inclusion. It's hugely exciting and encouraging to see so many firms taking the steps to ensure that their employees can be themselves in the workplace."
