DLA Piper, DWF and Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) have won places on Uber's EMEA legal panel after a review of the taxi company's external advisers.

The panel was put out to tender at the end of 2016 and most of the process was handled by the company's US in-house legal team. Uber also has a separate US panel for all its Stateside legal advice.

Hogan Lovells and Scots firm Shepherd and Wedderburn were not appointed to the EMEA panel, but will continue to provide off-panel advice.

DLA, HSF, Hogan Lovells and Shepherd and Wedderburn have all previously worked with Uber. Last year, the company instructed Hogan Lovells to challenge new rules that were set to be introduced by Transport for London (TfL). Uber filed an application for a judicial review in the High Court in London to block TfL's plans.

Uber claimed that the new rules were too restrictive, including requirements for drivers to speak a minimum standard of English and to have insurance cover when they are not working.

Last year, DLA represented Uber when UK drivers won the right to be classed as workers rather than self-employed, after succeeding in a landmark legal challenge.

In recent months, the company has also turned to Iberian law firm Cuatrecasas Goncalves Pereira to argue on its behalf in a European Court of Justice hearing to determine how Uber should be regulated within the EU.

Uber declined to comment.
