Results from the top law firms in the US are coming in thick and fast, and a clear picture is emerging (with the odd exception, such as Cadwalader) – 2016 was a strong year for those in the world's largest legal market.

Last week, Cooley, Davis Polk, Milbank and White & Case were among a host of US firms posting positive growth in 2016, though the latter saw its London office outpaced by the firm globally as Brexit and slower deal markets made their impact felt.

All of the results are being compiled by our US sister title The American Lawyer, which will publish its definitive ranking of the largest firms across the Atlantic by revenue in the coming months (here's last year's list).

Aiding some US firms' performance will have been their roles on a number of high profile mandates, with research showing US firms won half of the lead advisory roles on Europe's largest deals in 2016.

But it wasn't good news for all US firms last week. In a seven-day period dominated by team exits and high profile individual moves, Kirkland & Ellis saw a seven-partner team quit for stateside rival Sidley Austin in Germany.
