Gowling WLG has expanded in Germany with the launch of an office in Stuttgart, the firm's second base in the country.

The new office will focus on corporate, M&A, capital markets and commercial work, and will operate in tandem with the firm's other Germany base, in Munich, which specialises in intellectual property and IT.

Corporate partner Andreas Woelfle will lead the launch of the new office, after joining as Germany corporate head a year ago from Stuttgart firm Menold Bezler.

He will be supported by counsel Petra Beyer, a corporate and banking specialist who joined Gowling WLG two months ago after around 15 years at German firm Haver & Mailaender. The duo will initially work alongside one principal associate.

Gowling WLG head of international projects Quentin Poole said: "With the opening of the new office, we are able to meet the increasing demand for our legal advice in the German market. A strong local team enables us to optimise the service for our clients."

Woelfle added: "Stuttgart and the Baden-Wurttemberg region are home to some of our most outstanding clients in our key sectors such as automotive, technology and advanced manufacturing. They already draw upon our expertise in corporate law and M&A transactions. With colleagues on the ground, we can provide even better services for our clients."

Gowling WLG's presence in Germany dates back to 2008, when legacy firm Wragge & Co launched an IP-focused office led by ex-Meissner Bolte partner Michael Schneider.
