Dentons is set to cut nine roles in its Watford office, a year on from opening in the town through its acquisition of Matthew Arnold & Baldwin's (MAB) banking litigation team.

The firm is set to axe two partners, three solicitors, one paralegal and three secretaries , with consultations with the non-partners ongoing.

The global firm opened in Watford with the hire of a 75-strong team from MAB in January 2016, with the planned redundancies therefore equating to 12% of the team as it stood then.

At the time of the acquisition, Dentons brought over 11 partners, 34 associates and 30 paralegals from MAB, led by partners Steven Mills and Clare Stothard, with the lawyers spending some of their time in London.

MAB's banking clients included Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland, Woolwich, UBS and Santander. MAB closed after the Dentons' acquisition, with other teams joining Hill Dickinson and Veale Wasbrough Vizards.

A spokesman for Dentons said: "The flexible resourcing model that we offer from our Watford office is designed to be responsive to the financial litigation and regulatory requirements of our banking clients; and following the conclusion of some major pieces of litigation, we can confirm that we are regrettably making a small reduction to the size of the team."

News of the UK cuts comes after it emerged late last week that the firm was also axing roles on the other side of the Atlantic, shedding 60 roles in its business services team. Dentons merged with McKenna Long & Aldridge in 2015, giving the firm 1,100 lawyers in the US.

Dentons said the US job losses were necessary to remove duplication after integrating US and global support teams in the year since the merger. In a statement, it said: "In many US locations, we have concluded moving from two offices to one and consolidated many systems, among other integration. As a result, earlier this week we implemented a realignment of our business services teams. Regrettably, this resulted in notifications of an overall reduction of approximately 60 positions in business services across our 22 US offices."

In May last year, Dentons announced it was to cut approximately 50 legal services roles in the UK, as it moved to open a business services centre in Warsaw to service its Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

Approximately half of that figure involved redundancies, while half consisted of "fixed term contracts in the UK that were not renewed, vacancies in the UK at the time of the announcement that have now been filled in the DBSE [Warsaw], and natural attrition since the announcement in May 2016".
