Clifford Chance (CC) partner Simon Davis has been elected as the Law Society's next president, and will take up the role in 2019.

Davis has been at CC since 1982, qualifying in 1984 and making partner in 1994. He is one of the magic circle firm's most senior litigators, and a former president of the London Solicitors Litigation Association.

He also spent five years as CC's recruitment partner between 1995 and 2000.

At the Law Society he will take office as deputy vice-president in July, before becoming vice-president in 2018 and finally becoming president in 2019.

Davis, speaking to Legal Week, said: "When in the role, I want to have a relentless focus on the members and make sure that they are best represented and, as a consequence, clients' needs are best met.

"It is a great privilege to have been elected to represent the profession. I intend to represent the Law Society's broad spread of members as I represent my clients – finding out and resolving the challenges they face, permitting our members in turn to devote their energies to representing the clients who depend on them."

Law Society president Robert Bourns said: "I congratulate Simon, who emerged as the winner from an extremely strong field of candidates. I wish him all the very best for his three years as an office holder."

In 2014, Bourns was chosen ahead of six other candidates for the role of Law Society president, taking up the post in 2016.

The news comes after Law Society chief executive Catherine Dixon resigned in January after just two years in the role, over a lack of progress in attempts to reform its governance.
