Sullivan & Cromwell is to open an office in Brussels with the hire of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati competition partner Michael Rosenthal.
The launch will hand the US firm its fourth base in Europe, alongside London, Frankfurt and Paris. In total, it now has 13 offices worldwide.
Rosenthal was the founder and head of Wilson Sonsini's first European office in Brussels. He joined the firm in 2011 from Hunton & Williams, where he was Brussels managing partner and chair of the firm's European competition practice.
He advises on European Union and German competition law, and his clients include BWM, Chevron, Dell and Spotify.
Last year, he advised on Cinven's sale of web services provider HEG to US competitor GoDaddy for €1.69bn (£1.44bn). He was part of Wilson Sonsini's team acting for GoDaddy on the deal. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised Cinven.
Sullivan chairman Joseph Shenker said: "Michael is a demonstrated leader in the European competition field… His experience and expertise will continue to expand our antitrust and merger clearance practice servicing clients in Europe and throughout the world."
The news comes amid several moves in the Brussels lateral partner market. Last week, Quinn Emmanuel Urquhart & Sullivan hired two more partners from Shearman & Sterling's Brussels office. The latest recruits – who will be reunited with former Quinn colleague Trevor Soames – are Shearman's global competition head and Brussels managing partner Stephen Mavroghenis and fellow competition partner Miguel Rato.
Other firms are also relocating partners to Brussels amid a spike in work prompted by last year's Brexit vote. In April, Legal Week reported Slaughter and May is planning to relocate six competition lawyers from London to Brussels this year.
