Wm Morrison Supermarkets' group general counsel Mark Amsden has left the supermarket giant after four years in the role.

Amsden – who was also company secretary at the supermarket – has not revealed his next move and his replacement is yet to be announced.

Amsden joined Morrisons as GC in February 2013 from Addleshaw Goddard, where he was a partner specialising in commercial litigation.

In the same year that Amsden joined Morrisons, he ran a tender to create the supermarket's first ever formal legal panel. Firms to win places on the panel included Allen & Overy (A&O), Ashurst, Evershed Sutherland and DAC Beachcroft, among others.

The panel is divided into six categories: property, employment, personal injury, licensing and regulatory, Scotland and an 'everything else' panel, which covers corporate, commercial, litigation, pensions and IP.

It is understood that A&O and Ashurst handle the lion's share of the company's high-end corporate and commercial work.

At the time of the review, Amsden admitted that the retail giant had previously overspent on legal fees.

Other big in-house moves recently include Channel 4's hire of Amali de Silva as its new controller of legal and compliance from media law firm Wiggin. She replaced Prash Naik, who was appointed as the broadcaster's first GC in 2014.

Last month, taxi-hailing app Uber's EMEA general counsel Jim Callaghan left the company after less than a year in the role.
