Clyde & Co has hired a five-strong Eversheds Sutherland shipping team in Newcastle, led by the firm's shipping head Stephen Mackin and fellow shipping partner Jessica Maitra.

Mackin and Maitra have been at Eversheds for 25 and 18 years respectively, with Mackin serving as Newcastle senior partner since 2014.

They will be joined at Clydes by two associates and a legal director. The group comprises Eversheds' entire Newcastle shipping team.

Eversheds will retain a shipping practice, with lawyers based in London and throughout its wider network, although Mackin and Maitra were the firm's key partners in the sector.

The move will significantly bolster Clydes' Newcastle office, which currently has four partners and 23 lawyers in total. The firm gained the office as a result of its 2015 merger with Scottish firm Simpson & Marwick.

Mackin and Maitra focus on shipping- and energy-related matters, particularly concerning the carriage of liquid cargo such as oil, LNG and chemicals. Before qualifying as a solicitor, Mackin was a navigating officer with Shell Tankers.

Clydes shipping partner Andrew Preston said: "The team has a proven track record in the marine industry and has built a very successful practice in Newcastle, where they have a range of bluechip clients."

Mackin added that Clydes' global network and sector focus intersected with that of the team, particularly with regards to energy and insurance.

In a statement, Eversheds said: "Stephen and Jessica have been with us for many years and they leave with our best wishes. We shall continue to support our clients in the shipping sector through colleagues in other offices, including an experienced shipping and international trade team of six in London, and others in Europe, Middle East and Asia."
