(L-R) Awards host Andrew Ryan; Bill Cogan, partner, Jon Turner, finance, Cath Bell, operations director, Alex McPherson, co-founder, Caroline Sherrington, senior counsel, Ignition Law; Alex Berry, reporter, Legal Week
Finalists: lexnet.io; Lawyers Inc. (highly commended).
Ignition Law won the ABS award for its efforts to disrupt the legal sector by providing high quality legal services to entrepreneurs, startups and small businesses at a more affordable price.
The firm's model relies on technology and flexible working practices, improving operational efficiencies that it can pass on to its clients. The firm has an open-plan London office, where it has a core staff of eight, with a further 18 remote workers, the majority of those in the UK.
The firm offers real-time tracking software so that clients can check on the status of their matter and see a running total of fees, as well as using secure cloud-based storage so that clients can access their documents at any time. It also ensures its hires have an entrepreneurial mindset – both to better understand client needs and to help grow Ignition Law itself.
In its first year of business the firm added 191 clients, with an aim to double that in the following 18 months (at the time of writing it was just two clients short of that target).
"An imaginative use of ABS and an impressive example of using technology innovatively to achieve efficiencies while ensuring quality service," a judge said.
