(L-R) Awards host Andrew Ryan; Beth Jennings, marketing manager, and Zelinda Bennett, international marketing director, DLA Piper; awards judge Anne Groves
Finalists: BLM (highly commended); Hogan Lovells; Paul Hastings; Serjeants' Inn Chambers.
DLA Piper's comprehensive training programme for in-house lawyers helped it win the award for client management innovation.
The WIN initiative (What In-house lawyers Need) comprises events, tools, forums and networking opportunities designed to develop and improve the technical, personal and commercial skills needed to work in-house. The firm has also introduced a programme called Future Legal Leaders that offers support and training to junior lawyers, recognising the long-term value of establishing relationships with potential future general counsel.
DLA Piper hosts more than 70 WIN events every year, with more than 5,500 clients registered for the programme across the world (WIN now operates in 28 cities globally). It also provides an on-demand interactive online training platform, which provides webinars and recordings of live panels, and is available to registered in-house lawyers regardless of whether they are clients or not.
Aside from standard in-house training on topics such as presentation skills and negotiation, the programme also offers slightly offbeat sessions on joy and happiness, meditation and stress management, and even nutrition for enhanced performance.
"Easily the best example of how law firms can engage with its clients – offering training to junior in-house counsel," praised a judge.
