Clyde & Co has hired veteran intellectual property (IP) lawyer Elliot Papageorgiou as a partner in Shanghai.

Papageorgiou joins from IP specialist firm Rouse, where he had been a partner for 13 years. He specialises in patent and trademark litigation and enforcement cases in China, and also advises on IP strategies and portfolio management.

He is moving to Clydes with four other Chinese-licensed lawyers, who will be part of the UK firm's Chinese joint venture, Clyde & Co Westlink.

Papageorgiou joined Rouse in 1999 in London and five years later made partner and moved to China. He helped build an IP practice in China for Rouse during a period of 12 years, before leaving the firm in March of this year. Earlier in his career, he practiced with Australian firm Clayton Utz and worked in-house with Getty Images and London-based market intelligence firm Datamonitor.

Former Rouse associates Zhengquan Gu and Leo Tang will both join Clyde & Co Westlink as local partners, while Molly Zhuang and Ying Ying will join as associates.

Clydes is one of a small number of international law firms that have taken advantage of a free trade agreement between Hong Kong and the mainland, and gained Chinese law capability by forming a joint venture with a Chinese firm.

By registering its mainland offices under the Hong Kong branch, the firm was able to launch Clyde & Co Westlink with southwestern China's Chongqing-based Westlink Partnership in late 2013, under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement.

In December, Westlink hired Yang Liu as a second partner, joining founder Carrie Chen.
