Sir Keir Starmer QC, the former director of public prosecutions for England and Wales, is in talks to join Mishcon de Reya.

Starmer is considering whether to take on a role as adviser to Mishcon Academy, the firm's in-house training and development wing.

Mishcon first hired Starmer, who is now a member of the Labour Party's shadow cabinet, in 2014 as a part-time dispute resolution consultant.

Starmer is currently the shadow secretary of state for exiting the European Union.

The firm said in a statement: "We are in discussions with Keir Starmer about reappointing him as an adviser to the Mishcon Academy.

"His wide experience and previous association with the firm would enable him to play a key and unique role in shaping the work of the Academy, which leads new thinking and develops the potential of everyone in the firm."

Starmer has had regular contact with the firm since becoming an MP in 2015. Starmer's declaration of interests shows that he last worked with Mishcon in February 2017, when he received just over £7,000 for legal advice given to the firm.

Prior to that, his last contact with the firm was in October 2016 when he declared that until further notice he would receive £4,500 a month from Mishcon Academy for six hours of legal advice.

Before entering politics, Starmer was a human rights lawyer and co-founded Doughty Street Chambers in 1990. He was called to the bar in 1987 and appointed to Queen's Counsel in 2002. In 2008, he was appointed DPP and head of the Crown Prosecution Service, a role he remained in until 2013.

Last year, Mishcon represented Gina Miller in her Supreme Court case against the government regarding the triggering of Article 50 without prior parliamentary approval.

Starmer has been approached for comment.
