Former Davis Polk & Wardwell partner Antony Dapiran is to join Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom as of counsel in Hong Kong.

Dapiran, who previously led Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's Beijing office, left Davis Polk's Hong Kong office earlier this year as about a dozen Hong Kong-based corporate lawyers were also set to leave. Multiple sources at that time said they had been  "given the hint to leave".

His exit from Davis Polk came after he spent seven years with the firm, handling securities offers and M&A deals related to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

He joined the Wall Street firm in 2010 from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he had been managing partner for the Beijing office. He made his name representing large Chinese state-owned enterprises such as the Agricultural Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the People's Insurance Company of China and China International Capital Corp, on overseas listings and cross-border transactions.

He had made partner at Freshfields only two years before he joined Davis Polk, having first joined the magic circle firm in 1999.

Dapiran's Hong Kong capital markets and M&A experience will complement Skadden's existing resources in China and reflects the firm's ongoing commitment to the region, said Julie Gao, the Hong Kong-based head of Skadden's China practice.

Dapiran, who starts on 1 September,  will also work closely with Hong Kong-qualified M&A partner Christopher Betts. Earlier this year, Skadden also launched a private funds practice in Asia by hiring partner Geoffrey Chan from Ropes & Gray.
