Latham & Watkins has made up two London lawyers to partner in a 31-strong global promotions round, in which female lawyers make up more than a third of the new partners.

The firm has promoted finance associate Charles Armstrong and corporate associate Huw Thomas to its City partnership. Armstrong previously worked as a senior associate at Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, Baker McKenzie and Clifford Chance before joining Latham. Thomas worked for CMS before joining Latham and has since spent seven months on secondment to  Deutsche Bank.

Eleven (35%) of Latham's new partners are female – a significant increase on last year when the firm only made up four women out of a total of 27 – equating to just 15%.

The bulk of this year's promotions are in the US, which will gain a total of 24 new partners. Elsewhere in Europe, Latham has made up two corporate lawyers – one in Duesseldorf and the other in Milan. By practice, the majority of promotions are in corporate (14), followed by litigation with 11 new partners.

All of the appointments are effective from 1 January 2018.

Last year, Latham also promoted  two associates to the partnership in London, having made up four in 2015.
