Private equity firm TPG has put together its first ever European legal panel, appointing four firms to the line-up.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Kirkland & Ellis and Sidley Austin have all won places on the investment firm's inaugural European roster.

The review was led by Bradford Berenson, who joined TPG as general counsel in January this year from General Electric, where he was senior counsel for litigation and legal policy. He is also a former Sidley Austin partner.

It is understood that the process, which began in September, was led out of the US and was heavily focused on procurement.

TPG also runs nine sub-panels across the various jurisdictions that it operates in, as well as sub-panels covering sectors such as M&A, litigation and funds. Its Asia panel is understood to include Clifford Chance, Cleary and White & Case.

Ropes & Gray, which has a longstanding relationship with TPG, is not on the European roster but does have place on the private equity firm's US panel. Earlier this year, Ropes advised TPG and its portfolio company, Beaver-Visitec, on the acquisition of Vitreq.

Freshfields, meanwhile, also took a role for TPG this summer on the €622m sale of Netherlands real estate platform Merin to Canadian real estate investment trust Dream Global.
