Latham & Watkins has promoted London derivatives lawyer Shatha Ali to partner, among a 16-strong round of counsel making the grade at the firm.

The 16 counsel being made up come in addition to 31 associates whose partner promotions were announced in November last year. All 47 appointments are effective from 1 January 2018.

Ali, whose practice focuses on transactional and regulatory advice relating to derivatives, as well as over-the-counter and structured finance transactions, has made partner just two years after being promoted to counsel. She also has experience in Islamic finance.

Her latest promotion means Latham has added three London lawyers to the partnership in total in this year's round, with finance associate Charles Armstrong and corporate associate Huw Thomas also made up.

The 16 counsel joining the partnership include 12 in Latham's domestic US offices, with the other three promoted in Hong Kong, Paris and Hamburg.

Latham recently became the world's first law firm to exceed $3bn in annual revenue, posting a total of $3.064bn for 2017, with profits per equity partner growing 6% to $3.25m.

The firm has gone through a concerted period of lateral recruitment in London in recent years, with a series of partners joining from top UK firms including Slaughter and May, Allen & Overy and Ashurst.
