Clifford Chance has made up seven City lawyers to partner in a 38%-female partner promotions round.

The seven London promotions are Cheng Li Yow and Daud Khan (corporate), Chinwe Odimba-Chapman and Sarah McAleer (tax), William Winterton (finance), Samantha Ward (litigation and Ian Painter (real estate).

Ten of the 26 new partners are female, representing 38% of the cohort – a significant improvement on last year, when the firm made up four female lawyers out of a 24-strong group, equating to 17%.

The firm, which last month become the first of the magic circle to include equity partners in its gender pay gap report, has made improving its partner gender balance a key priority and has set a target of achieving a 30% female partnership. Of the firm's current UK partners, 21% are women.

Eight of the other promotions – which take effect on 1 May – are spread across the firm's offices in continental Europe, including two in Frankfurt and two in Paris.

By practice, corporate is the principal beneficiary, receiving nine of the new partners.

The firm is the last of the magic circle to announce its 2018 promotions. Allen & Overy is making up four London lawyers in a 20-strong round, while earlier this month Freshfields announced the promotion of 12 lawyers in one of the firm's smallest ever partnership ounds

Linklaters is promoting 27 lawyers to partner this year, including 10 in London, while last month Slaughter and May made up three associates, including two women.

CC managing partner Matthew Layton said: "Each of them has established their credentials as a go-to adviser for clients by virtue of their well-recognised expertise and excellent client service skills. They share a strong international mindset – 80% of the group has already worked in more than one of our offices globally. The make-up of this group also demonstrates the breadth and diversity that will underpin our future success."
