Former Slaughter and May dispute resolution head Elizabeth Barrett has been tipped to run the UK's audit watchdog.

Barrett, who retired from Slaughters two years ago, was head of Slaughters' litigation practice between 2004 and 2008.

The Times reported today (30 May) that Barrett has been recruited to head up the Financial Reporting Council's (FRC) enforcement division, which has previously faced criticism for being too soft on the auditors and accountants it investigates.

The FRC formally declined to comment on the hire, with any appointment still needing to be approved by the Treasury before it could go ahead.

Should the move go ahead, Barrett would replace Claudia Mortimore who has been holding the post on an interim basis since Gareth Rees QC quit to join King & Spalding in November.

If Barrett takes the role, she will be responsible for investigations including the role of auditors KPMG in signing off defunct construction giant Carillion's accounts in the months leading up to its collapse in January.

Earlier this month, Legal Week reported that Slaughters was considering hiring the former Serious Fraud Office director, David Green QC. Green had investigated Slaughters' client Rolls Royce as part of a bribery accusation launched in 2013.

Another former Slaughters partner, Charles Randall, became chairman of the Financial Conduct Authority in April.

The FRC declined to comment.
