The sixth annual African Legal Awards have called for entries from international and African law firms, as well as in-house legal departments and general counsel.
The awards, hosted by Legal Week and the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA) and supported by The American Lawyer, aim to recognise exceptional achievement from within Africa's legal community amid the expansion of the African economic and legal markets.
Some of the awards up for grabs include International Law Firm of the Year, African Law Firm of the Year (Large and Small Practice), General Counsel of the Year and Legal Department of the Year (Large Team and Small Team).
The awards, to be hosted in Johannesburg on 7 September, cover: M&A; banking, finance and restructuring; competition and regulation; employment; IP; dispute resolution; environmental, energy and natural resources; TMT; transportation and infrastructure; and property and construction.
This year, a new category – Best Use of Technology – has been introduced and is open to law firms, in-house teams or legal departments and networks.
The deadline for this year's entries is Friday 29 June 2018.
Last year's winners include Baker McKenzie, which took home the award for International Law Firm of the Year, and Kenya-based Anjarwalla & Khanna, winner of African Law Firm of the Year (Large Practice).
South African legal insurance provider Law For All was named Legal Department of the Year (Large Team).
The Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa Achievement Award was won by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, who ruled in June 2017 that a no-confidence vote against South Africa's president, Jacob Zuma, could be held in secret.
The African Legal Awards 2018 will take place the day after Legal Week Corporate Counsel Forum Africa.
