White & Case boosts New York associate salaries to match Cravath but freezes London rates
UK associates will see salary bands frozen while those in the US will receive Cravath's increases

White & Case is to raise associate salary rates in New York in line with Cravath but has opted to keep UK rates at the levels set last year.
Associates working in all US offices paid on the firm's New York scale will see salaries increased in line with Cravath, putting the most junior lawyers on $190,000.
London associates will continue to progress through the firm's pay bands as normal but the rates have been frozen at last year's level, which sees NQs take home £105,000.
The US firm ramped up pay for UK associates by up to 19% last year in a bid to bolster its position in the City, matching the £105,000 newly qualified (NQ) rate set by Shearman & Sterling earlier that year.
The rise meant NQ pay increased from £90,000 to £105,000, pay for lawyers with one year's post-qualification experience (PQE) jumped by 16% to £110,000, and pay for lawyers with two years' PQE saw the biggest rise, with a 19% jump to £120,000.
The firm previously held UK salaries steady during the 2016 round of pay rises, having increased them by 20% in 2015.
While a host of US firms have opted to match Cravath's rates in the US, the response has been more mixed than usual, with many still to confirm their plans.
US rival Reed Smith announced last week that it would not increase associate salaries in any of its offices globally, while Quinn Emanuel said that it would be making smaller increases in the UK than the US.
White & Case's US associates will now be paid according to the following pay scale:
- Class of 2017 – $190,000
- Class of 2016 – $200,000
- Class of 2015 – $220,000
- Class of 2014 – $255,000
- Class of 2013 – $280,000
- Class of 2012 – $305,000
- Class of 2011 – $325,000
- Class of 2010 – $340,000
Other firms paying the same as Cravath in the US include: Milbank, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Kirkland & Ellis, Ropes & Gray, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, Willkie Farr & Gallagher, Davis Polk & Wardwell, Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and Sullivan & Cromwell.
