DLA Piper has recruited a six-strong Baker McKenzie financial services and insurance team for its Antwerp office.

The team is headed up by partner Pierre Berger, who led the Belgium and EMEA financial services and insurance practice at Bakers and has been a partner at the firm since 2011.

Other lawyers making the move to DLA Piper include senior lead lawyer Isabelle Van Biesen, associates Simon Landuyt, Pauline Kustermans and Stephanie Liebaert, and trainee Caroline Fabri.

The new team will bolster DLA Piper's continental financial services and insurance sector offering in Belgium and other European jurisdictions, as well as the law firm's fintech and insurtech practice.

According to the firm's website, DLA currently has eight lawyers in Antwerp, including corporate partner Koen Selleslags.

Jean-Pierre Douglas-Henry, global co-chair of DLA Piper's litigation and regulatory group, said: "This major addition follows a significant increase in client demand for financial and insurance regulatory services on the continent. Pierre and his team bring a wealth of experience to our existing capabilities, ensuring that we are uniquely well placed to advise our Belgian and international clients on this complex and developing area, both now and in the wake of Brexit."

A Bakers spokesperson said the Belgium financial services and insurance practice would now be coordinated between banking and finance partners Antoine De Raeve – head of the EMEA banking and finance practice group – and Michael Van Acker, alongside associate Olivier Van den Broeke.

The news comes after Bakers announced its latest global partner promotions, which included Brussels competition lawyer Joost Haans.
