Latham & Watkins has made up nine London lawyers to its partnership, in a significant increase on the US firm's recent City promotions rounds.

The US firm, which has made up a total of 31 associates across its US and European offices, has promoted three London finance associates (Karan Chopra, Angel Quek and Chirag Sanghrajka) and six in corporate – Fritz Ernemann, Fiona Maclean, James McCrory, Christian McDermott, Matthew Schneider and Linzi Thomas (pictured).

The round marks a significant increase on the amount of City lawyers made up in recent years. For the past two years, just two Latham lawyers were promoted in London, while four made the grade in 2015.

Elsewhere in Europe, the firm has made up one lawyer to partner in Frankfurt.

The rest of the appointments are spread across Latham's US offices in Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, San Francisco and New York.

By practice, the firm's corporate practice has seen the bulk of the promotions with 13 lawyers made up, followed by finance with nine.

The firm has also promoted 22 associates to counsel. All appointments are effective as of 1 January next year.

Elsewhere, fellow US firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has also announced its latest partner promotions, making up eight new partners around the world.

The firm has made up one partner in London, with disputes lawyer James Brady promoted, alongside four in New York, two in Paris and one in Washington DC.

The firm has also promoted seven associates to counsel, including London employment lawyer Melissa Reid.

Last year Cleary also made up one London lawyer to partnership, in a reduced global round of three.
