South African legal insurance provider Law For All took home the prize for Best Use of Technology in recognition of its automated advice tool, which has enabled about a third of cases to be resolved almost instantly.

Working with data scientists at DataProphet and six in-house developers, Law For All fed years of legal cases from its internal CRM system into an artificial intelligence algorithm to train it to provide legal advisers with instant advice and relevant documentation, with a confidence score given for each suggestion. That means legal advisers need not waste time on easy-to-solve cases and can instead focus on those that require mediation or more extensive legal attention, which has allowed the firm to shave almost a week off the time spent tending to the latter (the firm predicts that will be cut even further as more in-house lawyers are trained to use the tech).
