Leading Indian law firm Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co has hired a tax partner in New Delhi from Big Four accounting firm EY.
Rajat Bose joins Shardul Amarchand after two stints and seven and a half years at EY, most recently as an executive director focusing on indirect tax, goods and services tax, value-added tax, customs and international trade.
In-between the two EY stints – from 2015 to 2019 and 2009 to 2012 – Bose was a co-founding partner at local boutique Reina Legal for two years. Previously, he was a tax consultant for a year and a half at another Big Four auditor, KPMG, and was an associate at local boutique Zeus Law Associates for a year.
Shardul Amarchand is one of the largest firms in India, with 520 lawyers. The firm is one half of a 2015 split from legacy Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co, following a feud between brothers and former co-managing partners Shardul and Cyril Shroff. Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas is the other half.
Since last year, the Big Four accounting firms have been actively expanding their legal arms in Asia – particularly in Hong Kong and Singapore – recruiting lawyers from international firms and top local firms.
But hiring has also gone in the other direction: EY lost lawyers to Australia's Gadens and to U.K. firms Simmons & Simmons, Gowling WLG, and Scotland-based Brodies; and a former tax managing director from PwC jumped to Mayer Brown as a partner in Los Angeles.
