Magic circle firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and German outfit Hengeler Mueller have been called in to advise on merger talks between two of Germany's biggest banks.

Deutsche Bank confirmed this week that it has entered merger discussions with rival Commerzbank.

In a statement, Deutsche said: "In light of arising opportunities, the management board of Deutsche Bank has decided to review strategic options. In doing so, the management board of Deutsche Bank is focused on improving the growth profile and profitability of the bank. There is no certainty that any transaction will occur."

Commerzbank is being advised by German heavyweight Hengeler Mueller. Its team is being led by corporate partners Johannes Adolff, Hartwin Bungert and Daniela Favoccia, accompanied by banking partner Dirk Bliesener, corporate partner Lucina Berger and tax partner Martin Klein.

A source with knowledge of the deal told Legal Week that Freshfields is advising Deutsche Bank. Freshfields declined to give further information.

The firm advised the bank last year over a £8.4m professional negligence claim with Blake Morgan.

Last week, another possible bank tie-up emerged when OneSavings Bank and listed company Charter Court Financial Services entered talks. Slaughter and May, Linklaters and Eversheds Sutherland are advising on the discussions.
