China's Jingtian & Gongcheng has recruited a private investment funds partner in Beijing.

James Wang joins from rival Han Kun Law Offices, where he was a partner leading the firm's private funds practice. Wang represents China-based private equity and venture capital firms on forming dollar- and renminbi-denominated funds.

Wang joined Han Kun in 2010 to lead a funds practice. He came from Greenberg Traurig, where he was a partner based in Shanghai and New York.

Wang's fund formation practice will complement Jingtian's existing capital markets practice and help the firm build a one-stop-shop corporate finance offering from fund formation management to initial public offerings, according to Gao Xiang, a partner and member of Jingtian's management committee.

Beijing-based Jingtian, known for its overseas listing practice, has been expanding beyond its core strength in recent years. In 2017, the firm hired disputes partner Liu Siyuan from King & Wood Mallesons, who specialises in enforcement and government investigations in the securities sector. The firm also launched a Hong Kong office last year with former Mayer Brown partners Elaine Lo and Nicholas Chan.

At Han Kun, Beijing partners Daisy Qi and Evan Zhang and Shanghai partner Kelvin Gao advise on fund formation and management. The firm's funds practice works alongside Han Kun's well-known venture capital and private equity investment practice. It has also branched out of its traditional strength to antitrust, private client and dispute resolution practices.
