Two of Italy's top law firms, BonelliErede and Lombardi e Associati, have announced they plan to merge.

BonelliErede, Slaughter and May's Italian best friend firm, will take on about 70 legal professionals, including 21 partners, from Lombardi e Associati from July 1. Only 10 of the partners will retain the partner rank in their new firm, which will have 750 people and be the largest in Italy.

Both firms are regarded as the country's top litigation advisers, according to directory rankings, with Lombardi also focusing on corporate advice, where BonelliErede is highly regarded.

Lombardi corporate partner Stefano Nanni Costa will join the BonelliErede board, bringing the number of members to eight.

Two partners, Carla Mambretti and Nicola Gaglione, and six others from Lombardi will not be moving to the newly combined firm. Instead they will be joining Gattai Minoli Agostinelli & Partners. Mambretti will head its new energy and infrastructure department.

"This integration propels us on to a great new adventure," BonelliErede's president Stefano Simontacchi said in a statement. "With the integration of Lombardi e Associati, we confirm our position as the market leader in Italy and, furthermore, we add recognised expertise and longstanding experience in law."

BonelliErede is well known for its longstanding relationship with Magic Circle firm Slaughter and May. It is part of the U.K. firm's network of international allies, which also includes Hengeler Mueller in Germany, Spain's Uria Menendez and France's Bredin Prat.
