Allen & Overy has hired capital markets partner Pallavi Gopinath Aney in Singapore from Baker McKenzie – a move designed to boost its India practice, which has lost lawyers in the past year.
U.K.-qualified Gopinath focuses on debt and equity offerings in India and southeast Asia. In 2017, she represented Indonesian state-run toll road operator PT Jasa Marga Persero Tbk on a $295 million London Stock Exchange-listed, rupiah-denominated ('Komodo') bond – the first such offering by an Indonesian issuer.
Gopinath leaves Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow, as the global legal giant is branded in Singapore, after almost four years with the firm. Previously, she practised at Linklaters for nine years, most recently as managing associate.
Stephen Miller, Allen & Overy's Hong Kong-based head of international capital markets in Asia, said in a statement that Gopinath adds depth to the Magic Circle firm's India practice and will help drive further growth in the market.
Gopinath's appointment covers the loss of three India debt capital markets specialists, all based in Hong Kong, since May of last year: partner Amit Singh moved to Linklaters in Singapore, counsel David Cameron departed for Dorsey & Whitney as a partner, and associate Debolina Saha left for an in-house role. India-focused finance senior associate Kunal Katre also left Allen & Overy in Singapore to join Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow as a local principal (equivalent to of counsel) in April.
In addition to Gopinath, Allen & Overy also hired former Shearman & Sterling counsel Felipe Duque as a capital markets partner in Singapore in March.
The Magic Circle firm is currently in merger talks with U.S. firm O'Melveny & Myers, with Legal Week reporting in March that the two firms are in the final stages of discussions.
