Garrigues has named longstanding partner Javier Ybáñez as its new senior partner.

The Spain-based firm announced on Wednesday that Ybáñez has replaced Ricardo Gómez-Barreda in the top role.

Gómez-Barreda, who was co-managing partner for two years before taking up the senior partner mantle in 2013, decided not to stand for re-election, according to the firm's statement.

Ybáñez started his career at the firm in 1988, becoming head of the corporate and commercial law department in 2010. He went on to set up some of the firm's Latin America offices as part of a global expansion drive.

In his new role, Ybáñez will oversee the much of the firm's governance and policy concerns, as well as manage relations with partners.

Founded in 1941, Garrigues has 32 offices in 13 countries across four continents. It opened its London office in 2007.

A partner at the firm since 1993, Gómez-Barreda will continue to act as a fee-earner in the firm's tax practice.

On Ybáñez's appointment, Garrigues' executive chairman Fernando Vives said: "I am sure that Javier will do a fantastic job in the role of senior partner, as he has in all of the positions he has held at the firm. His professionalism, savoir-faire and dedication will be key to enabling us to take on the significant challenges facing the firm."
