Ian Gordon, a former Hogan Lovells partner based in Perth, has left the firm to become general counsel at oil and gas explorer and producer INPEX Australia.

Gordon spent one and a half years at Hogan Lovells, where he specialised in corporate transactions and regulatory matters in the energy and resources sector.

In 2015, Gordon advised Mitsui E&P Australia Pty. Ltd., the Perth-based oil and gas exploration and production subsidiary of Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. Ltd., on a $390 million acquisition of a 35% stake in the Kipper gas field in the Gippsland Basin, offshore of Victoria, from Adelaide-based gas producer Santos Ltd.

Before Hogan Lovells, Gordon practised at King & Wood Mallesons for six years, most recently as special counsel. Before that, he practised for 12 years at Baker McKenzie, where he made partner in Tokyo in 2010.

Gordon's departure leaves Hogan Lovells with mergers and acquisitions lawyer Matthew Johnson as the sole partner in Perth. The transatlantic firm also has five partners in its other Australia office, in Sydney.

In February, the founding partners of Hogan Lovells' Australian offices, the husband-and-wife team of Tim and Nicky Lester, left to launch a corporate advisory firm. Hogan Lovells is still in growth mode in Australia, which Asia-Pacific and Middle East regional head Miguel Zaldivar told The Asian Lawyer last year is a top priority for him and due for growth after several years of stability.

Also in February, Hogan Lovells recruited Baker McKenzie's former Asia-Pacific capital markets head David Holland and former Gilbert + Tobin corporate partner Charles Bogle, both in Sydney.
