DLA Piper has hired a five-partner mergers and acquisitions team in Melbourne from Norton Rose Fulbright, including Australia corporate co-head Shane Bilardi.

As well as Bilardi, James Stewart, Jyoti Singh, Chris Mitchell and Andrew Fisken will join DLA Piper in the coming months. The firm said in a statement that it also has hired additional lawyers, including special counsel and senior associates, from Norton Rose Fulbright's Melbourne, Sydney and Perth offices.

Bilardi, who co-leads Norton Rose Fulbright's Australia corporate and M&A practice with Sydney-based partner Alison Deitz, joined Norton Rose Fulbright via its 2010 acquisition of Deacons Australia, where he made partner in 2008.

In 2016, Bilardi represented British oil and gas giant BP Plc. on a $1.3 billion proposed takeover of Australia-based supermarket chain operator Woolworths Ltd.'s Australian gas station business; the deal was scrapped in 2018, having been blocked by Australia's competition authorities.

Despite the five-partner team departure, Norton Rose Fulbright maintains a large office in Melbourne with about 30 partners. In December, tax partner Andrew Spalding left the firm's Melbourne office for local firm Mills Oakley, while Adrian Jones joined as a real estate partner in November from an in-house role at London-based student accommodation facilities operator Scape Student Living Ltd.

"We are an agile business, focused on change, and we constantly flex our shape to satisfy client needs and capture emerging market opportunities," said a Sydney-based spokesperson for Norton Rose Fulbright. "In that spirit, we look forward to announcing our new partner promotions and further additions to the partnership soon."*
