Milbank and White & Case were among the big winners at the Transatlantic Legal Awards last night (June 13).
At a ceremony at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower, Milbank took home the coveted Transatlantic Law Firm of the Year award, heading off strong competition from several elite firms including Kirkland & Ellis, Davis Polk & Wardwell and Shearman & Sterling.
Judges praised the New York-headquartered firm for providing a "great example of transatlantic collaboration", after growing its London revenue by a quarter last year.
White & Case private equity co-head Ian Bagshaw was honoured with the Transatlantic Law Firm Leader of the Year award, having contributed to U.K. profit growth of more than a third last year, and notably leading on SoftBank Vision Fund's headline-making investment in U.K. fintech company OakNorth.
Meanwhile, U.S. firms Paul Hastings and Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom each received two gongs for individual awards, while Skadden was also awarded a third joint award.
Paul Hastings won Transatlantic M&A Team of the Year for large deals, and Transatlantic Private Equity Team of the Year, while Skadden was awarded Transatlantic Antitrust Team of the Year, for their work on the complex Rockwell merger case, as well as Restructuring Team of the Year.
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett's Claire Gaskell bettered Cravath Swaine & Moore's Richard Hall to take home the Transatlantic Dealmaker of the Year award on the back of "excellent client feedback".
Underpinned by its work on Comcast's historic bid for Sky, Davis Polk fended off the likes of Cravath and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer to take the Transatlantic M&A Team of the Year (Mega Deals) award.
Sullivan & Cromwell won the award for Transatlantic Debt Capital Markets of the Year, while its partner Steve Holley – who led antitrust teams on issues surrounding the two largest transatlantic mergers of 2018 – was awarded the Transatlantic Disputes/Regulatory Lawyer of the Year title.
Global professional services company Avanade was also one of the night's double award winners, taking the Transatlantic Legal Department of the Year award, as well as the individual award for Transatlantic General Counsel of the Year for David Oskandy.
Other winners included Cooley and Ropes & Gray, which picked up Transatlantic Litigation Team of the Year and Transatlantic Finance Team of the Year respectively, Shearman & Sterling which took home Transatlantic Equity Capital Markets Team of the Year, and Garrigues, which was awarded Transatlantic Independent Law Firm of the Year for its Latin America growth.
