Dentons has appointed Marien Glerum as Benelux managing officer, responsible for the management and financial oversight of the Amsterdam, Brussels and Luxembourg offices.
Glerum had been working as Dentons' Netherlands managing officer. Prior to that, he had worked at the Dutch law firm Boekel, where he was finance officer and CEO until the firm merged with Dentons in 2017. Before joining Boekel in 2010, he worked at Clifford Chance.
"Under Marien's leadership, our Amsterdam office has become the fastest-growing law firm in the Netherlands, and I am confident that he will have continued success in further developing our practice across the Benelux region," Tomasz Dabrowski, Europe CEO at Dentons, said in a statement.
Glerum said in an interview that in his new role he will focus on taking advantage of the synergies between the three offices and expand the business. He will work closely with the three country managing partners – Wendela Raas in the Netherlands, Frederic Feyten in Luxembourg and Edward Borovikov in Belgium.
Amsterdam is the largest of the three offices, with annual income of €30 million (roughly $34 million), 100 lawyers and 28 partners, according to Glerum. The Luxembourg office brings in about €10m ($11 million) and has 30 lawyers and eight partners, while Brussels generates about €5m (nearly $6 million) and has 20 lawyers and eight partners.
Dentons' Amsterdam office has doubled in size since the merger with Boekel in 2017, Glerum said. The focus will be on expanding the Brussels and Luxembourg offices. "I'm confident we can achieve good growth in those markets," he said.
While the Brussels office is already a "tier one" office for EU law, including competition and trade, Glerum said the opportunities will be in the Belgian legal market.
Dentons' revenue in continental Europe and central Asia has nearly doubled during the past six years, according to Dabrowski. The firm now has 26 offices across continental Europe.
