Australian independent law firm MinterEllison is mourning the loss of a partner who was killed in a cycling accident during a family holiday last week.

Anton Hermann had been director of pro bono and community investment at MinterEllison since 2004, and combined his legal skills with a steadfast commitment to supporting the community and delivering positive change, the firm said. He worked with marginalised citizens and charities around Australia.

"It is with heartfelt sadness that we at MinterEllison, mourn the loss of our great friend and colleague Anton Hermann," Matthew Hibbins, MinterEllison's Melbourne managing partner, said in a statement. "Our thoughts and love are with his wife Karen and their children Joel, Ella and Tahlia, and all of Anton's family and friends at this sad time.

"As a real believer in our profession's ability to make a difference in the community, Anton's sense of purpose and his deep commitment to social justice issues have been an inspiration to us all, and a helping hand to so many in need."

After studying law at Melbourne's Monash University, Hermann started his legal career at MinterEllison, before becoming chief of staff for Federal Member of Parliament Mark Birrell, executive director of Jewish Community Services, and then chief executive of the Australian Council for Children and Youth Organisations.

He died on July 6 in a cycling accident while riding his bicycle during a family holiday near Port Douglas in northern Queensland. He lived in Melbourne.

"Anton in his role as director pro bono and community investment has over decades made an extraordinary contribution within and beyond our firm," said Annette Kimmitt, chief executive officer and managing partner. "Anton's sense of purpose and his deep commitment to social justice issues drove his professional and personal life."
