Longtime Morrison & Foerster Hong Kong partner Ma Xiaohu has left the firm and joined Beijing-based Hui Zhong Law Firm.

Ma, now a partner at Hui Zhong's Beijing office, has worked on both transactions and disputes matters. He advises on China-related securities offers and cross-border commercial disputes and arbitration cases. In May, he advised wind-turbine maker Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Co. Ltd. on a $706 million share offer.

Ma joined Morrison & Foerster in 1994, after working as a Hong Kong-based lawyer for the Chinese Ministry of Justice; he retired from the partnership recently but remained as senior counsel until June.

Beijing-based Hui Zhong, led by managing partner Fei Ning, specialises in high-stakes cross-border commercial dispute resolution and international arbitration, and collaborates frequently with global firms. Fei established Hui Zhong with partners in 2013 after six years with JunHe; he and his team moved to JunHe in 2007 from Haiwen & Partners, where he had practised since 1993.

Between two offices in Beijing and Shanghai, Hui Zhong has about 10 partners and three senior consultants with experience in arbitration. In 2017, Hui Zhong hired consultant Liu Jing, a former deputy secretary-general of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, in Shanghai.

"We have collaborated with Hui Zhong on numerous client matters over the past few years," said Hong Kong managing partner Tim Blakely, adding that Morrison & Foerster will continue to work with Ma and Hui Zhong.*
