Duane Morris has hired Nguyen Thi Lang as a corporate partner in Vietnam from local firm Frasers Law Co.
Nguyen, who will be based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest metropolis, focuses on corporate and commercial matters, including mergers and acquisitions, cross-border investment, real estate, pharmaceutical, commercial and infrastructure projects. She is qualified to practise in Vietnam.
Nguyen worked at Frasers Law Co. for more than six years. Previously, she practised at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer for more than eight years, most recently as international counsel. Before that, she was a lawyer at Big Four accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers' Vietnamese legal arm.
In addition to Nguyen, Giles Cooper and Oliver Massmann also spend time in Duane Morris's office in Ho Chi Minh City, although the two are based in the firm's office in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.
The Philadelphia-based firm is one of a handful of international firms in Vietnam. The others include Baker McKenzie, Allen & Overy, Freshfields, Hogan Lovells and Mayer Brown.
Meanwhile, Nguyen's departure leaves Frasers Law Co. with just two partners: Mark Fraser and Justin Gisz, both corporate lawyers. Fraser founded the firm in 2004 after leading the Ho Chi Minh City offices of legacy Freehills and Freshfields.
Fraser said the firm will continue to grow organically and may hire partners, adding that its fee-earner headcount is larger than it has ever been.*
Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing major economies in Asia. Last year, the southeast Asian nation's $200 billion-plus economy expanded at a 10-year high of 7.1% – the fastest in Asia after Bangladesh and Cambodia. However, the International Monetary Fund forecast that growth in Vietnam will slow down this year to 6.5%, citing trade tensions and volatility.
*Updated July 22: This article has been updated with comments from Mark Fraser.
