Clifford Chance's former Seoul office managing partner, Kim Hyun-suk, is joining a leading Vietnamese firm's Singapore office.
Kim, a U.S. lawyer specialising in capital markets, will join YKVN as a Singapore partner next month. Kim was until earlier this year the head of Clifford Chance's Seoul office and its Korea practice. Hong Kong partner Richard Lee and Seoul-based counsel Cho Bong-sang now co-lead the Magic Circle firm's Korea practice.
Last year, Kim served as U.S. securities law counsel to Korean insurer Hanwha Life Insurance Co. Ltd. on a $1 billion bond sale.
Kim joined Clifford Chance's Hong Kong office in 2009 and made partner two years later. In 2012, he relocated to Korea when the firm opened its Seoul office. Kim retired from the partnership at the end of last year but stayed on as a consultant. Previously, he practised at Davis Polk & Wardwell in Hong Kong and Tokyo; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in New York.
Minh Dang, the senior partner of YKVN and head of its Singapore office, said in a statement that Kim's deep knowledge of the Korean market will help the firm strategically broaden its offering in key practice areas. YKVN's Singapore office, which Dang launched in 2011, currently has eight lawyers, according to its website, focusing on cross-border capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, real estate and international arbitration.
Korea is one of the top foreign investors in Vietnam. It invested $7.2 billion into the southeast Asian nation last year – 20% of Vietnam's total foreign direct investment for 2018. About 6,000 Korean companies operate in Vietnam, including tech giants Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Display Co.
