Addleshaw Goddard's night-shift cleaners are going on strike next week (August 9) outside the firm's London headquarters where they work, in what the cleaners' union describes as "a protest against unequal working conditions".

Organised by the Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union (CAIWU), the strike is targeted at both the law firm and the cleaners' employers, Incentive FM.

In its release promoting the strike, CAIWU said: "Addleshaw Goddard specialises in 'employee incentives', yet they are not demanding that its cleaners enjoy even basic rights."

The CAIWU alleges that Incentive FM has failed "to pay its night-shift cleaning operatives at Addleshaw Goddard the London Living Wage"; has failed to award employees "an equal number of annual leave days per year"; and has failed "to offer [cleaners] a contractual sick pay agreement at Addleshaw Goddard", which the union describes as "unacceptable".

A spokesperson at Addleshaws said in a statement to Legal Week: "We are aware of the ongoing discussions between Incentive FM and its night-shift cleaners and hope a salary review scheduled for early autumn will result in a satisfactory outcome for all parties."

According to a spokesperson at the CAIWU, 30 to 40 people will attend the protest to support the roughly nine night-shift cleaners at Addleshaws who are not getting paid the London Living Wage.

Addleshaws awarded Incentive FM a "multimillion-pound contract" to provide facilities management services in 2015, according to Incentive's website. The company also provides services to Addleshaws' Leeds and Manchester offices.

The strike is scheduled to take place on Friday August 9 from 8am to 12pm outside Addleshaws' Milton Gate office in Moorgate.

The protest leaflet states that members of the CAIWU employed by Incentive and working at Addleshaws "have been campaigning for the London Living Wage for over two years".
