Gowling WLG has been appointed the sole legal adviser to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, following a "rigorous tender process".

The firm will advise on corporate governance, procurement and general commercial matters, as well as brand protection, disputes and risk management.

Gowling's team, led by corporate partner Michael Luckman,, will work alongside Birmingham 2022′s chief legal officer Caroline McGrory (also Leicester City's general counsel) during the next three years.

Gowling chief David Fennell said in a statement: "We're already working hard to support Caroline and the Birmingham 2022 team on the legal aspects, and to add value wherever we can to deliver a vibrant, inclusive and socially responsible Games."

The games will be held in Birmingham from July 27 to August 7, 2022, and will host a range of competitions in sports such as sprinting, aquatics and triathlon.

The multi-sport event will be accessible to U.K and Commonwealth athletes aged 14 to 65 years old, and will also offer a parasports programme.

Earlier this year, Gowling won a mandate to advise the government on its international climate finance portfolio, which aims to address climate change and sustainability issues in the U.K.
