Holman Fenwick Willan has hired shipping partner Christopher Metcalf in Singapore from Clyde & Co.

Metcalf advises on contentious and non-contentious matters in the shipping, offshore and oil and gas sectors, including shipping-related contract matters. He also advises insurers in southeast Asia.

Metcalf leaves Clyde & Co after two stints and more than 12 years with the firm. He first joined Clyde & Co in 2001 as an associate, before jumping to marine insurer North of England P&I Association Ltd. in 2006 as a lawyer. He relocated from the U.K. to Singapore in 2007 and rejoined Clyde & Co in 2011 as a senior associate. He made partner in 2013.

HFW's Singapore shipping head Toby Stephens said in a statement that Metcalf's dry shipping expertise complements the firm's existing strength in wet shipping and ship finance in the city-state. In 2017, HFW relocated Stephens and ship finance partner John Forrester from London to Singapore.

"This is another major hire for HFW in Singapore and part of our ongoing drive to expand and diversify our practice throughout Asia-Pacific," said Singapore office head Mert Hifzi in a statement, adding that the firm has recruited six Singapore partners since late 2017.

In early 2018, HFW hired three Singapore partners, including Siri Wennevik, from Norwegian shipping firm Wikborg Rein. Later that year, HFW lost Singapore partners Gareth Williams and Paul Apostolis to marine law boutique Campbell Johnston Clark.

HFW is one of 10 international firms with a formal law alliance in Singapore – with AsiaLegal since 2015 – allowing the firm to provide local litigation services through the alliance.

Globally, HFW has recruited eight shipping partners and a senior consultant in the past five months, including three partners from legacy Ince & Co in August to launch an office in Monaco. The firm said in a statement that its shipping group has 65 partners and more than 190 lawyers globally.
