The consulting arm of Australian law firm Sparke Helmore Lawyers has hired former PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Bruce McDonald in Sydney to lead its business consulting practice.

McDonald joins Sparke Helmore Consulting (SHC) as a principal adviser and will focus on "ensuring businesses are 'match fit' from a performance perspective – whether [through] improvements to operating models, operational process, costs or function effectiveness", Sparke Helmore said in a statement.

He joins the Australian firm after two stints with PwC. Most recently, McDonald helped Sydney-based PPB Advisory merge into the Big Four auditor's consulting arm last year and stayed on to assist integration. Before that, he spent two decades as a partner at PwC until 2012 and developed PwC's cost reduction, transformation and finance function effectiveness practices.

"Bruce is an exceptional operator with unparalleled consulting experience gained over many years across a number of sectors including health, government, telecoms, technology and banking," Jonathan Doy, chief executive officer of SHC, said in a statement, adding that having McDonald on board supports a deliberate growth plan to amplify the consulting practice in the next year.

SHC – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sparke Helmore – was launched in March by Doy, a former senior partner at accounting firm Crowe Horwath Australasia, and before that at PwC.

The consulting arm was launched to spearhead Sparke Helmore's growing move into allied services and provides tax advisory and business consulting to complement the core legal services.

"SHC has been a great addition to our business and has opened up many opportunities for our clients to work with us on comprehensive business solutions. Having Bruce join us ramps up our ambitious expansion plans and cements our commitment to being a unique market-leading professional services business," said Phillip Salem, national managing partner of Sparke Helmore.
