Estée Lauder Picks Former Thomson Reuters Legal Boss as New General Counsel
Deirdre Stanley, who served as GC at Thomson Reuters and its predecessor company for 17 years, succeeds Sara Moss, who was promoted to the newly created role of vice chairman in July.

The Estée Lauder Companies has plucked the longtime top attorney from Thomson Reuters to head its legal department.
Deirdre Stanley has been named executive vice-president and general counsel, effective October 28, the New York City-based cosmetics giant announced on Wednesday (September 4). She succeeds Sara Moss, who was promoted to the newly created role of vice-chairman in July.
Stanley, who could not immediately be reached for comment, had been EVP and GC at Thomson Reuters since 2008 and EVP and GC at its predecessor company, The Thomson Corporation, for nearly six years before it was acquired by Reuters, according to her LinkedIn profile. Under her leadership, Thomson Reuters' legal department, which includes attorneys in more than 10 countries in North America, Europe, Asia and multiple emerging markets, received Legal Week sister publication New York Law Journal's Legal Department of the Year award last year.
In her new role, Stanley will oversee Estée Lauder's legal organisation globally and will serve on its executive leadership team, acting as "a key partner" with leaders and business units organisation-wide on a range of legal matters, including corporate strategies, reporting, compliance, risk mitigation, governance and complex business transactions, according to a statement announcing her hire. She also will lead the company's legal review of potential acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures, it added.
"Deirdre is a highly talented, proven general counsel and seasoned executive, whose global business acumen and legal expertise are matched only by her leadership capabilities and sound judgement," executive chairman William Lauder said in the news release. "Deirdre's exemplary track record of leading large organisations and acting as a key strategic partner to multiple CEOs and boards at a family-controlled, publicly-traded company makes her uniquely suited to take on this role."
Prior to joining The Thomson Corporation, Stanley held in-house roles of increasing responsibility at InterActiveCorp/USA Networks, now IAC, and was associate GC at the GTE Corporation, a predecessor company to Verizon, serving as the lead lawyer for domestic mergers and acquisitions.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Stanley began her legal career at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where she spent seven years as a corporate associate, according to LinkedIn.
