Ropes & Gray has become the latest law firm to boost salaries for trainees in London.

The U.S. firm has increased its London first-seat trainee salary from £46,000 to £50,000, while second-seat trainees will now take home £55,000 – up 10% from £50,000.

The move draws the trainee salaries in line with U.S competitor Weil Gotshal & Manges, which raised its salaries to the same levels last month.

The raised pay surpasses fellow U.S. firm White & Case, which raised its first- and second-seat trainee salaries to £48,000 and £53,000, respectively.

In a statement, Ropes & Gray principal partner Rohan Massey said: "Ropes & Gray provides a perfect platform for talented, ambitious trainee lawyers focused on international careers, and our trainee programme – which is complemented by a highly competitive salary and benefits package – provides our talented trainees with an opportunity to work on complex and international matters from the get-go."

In February, Ropes increased its newly-qualified (NQ) lawyer salaries by 4% to £120,000, excluding bonuses.

This move was later followed by an increase by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, which kicked off an NQ salary war among UK firms.

The latest increase in trainee salary follows moves by multiple law firms to secure trainee talent. Earlier in the summer, Magic Circle firms Clifford Chance and Allen & Overy also boosted their salaries.
